This was a generic name for baleen whales that follow schools of fish to their spawning grounds to pray on them. For the fishermen, sightings heralded the start of the winter fisheries. People had the cause and effect mixed up and believed the whale was herding the fish into the fjords, and as such it was forbidden to hunt it for fear that the fish would disappear with it. As far as I know, this is the earliest known example of a whale being designated a protected species.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5194421.post-3792684328818070332014-01-04T17:21:10.152-08:002014-01-04T17:21:10.152-08:00This is a great post. This is a great post.Felix Gilmannoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5194421.post-10668850300378970012013-07-23T16:18:01.793-07:002013-07-23T16:18:01.793-07:00John,

I am currently writing a cultural history of the polar bear and would like to include an illustration of one of the two map details you show. Where can I get high-res (at least 2 MB at 300 dpi) printable downloads of these?

Also, please contact me about the mammoth book idea -- I've published seven books with university / regional presses and might be able to give you some pointers. (I also know at least one other writer who's working on a mammoth travelogue.)

engelhardm@gmail.com

Best,
Michael Engelhard
(Nome, Alaska)M.
